Strategically Building Your Network Now And For Your Future

Strategically Building Your Network Now And For Your Future
Stacie Garlieb, President, Successful Impressions LLC

In this session Stacie Garlieb describes how your network could be your open door and a way to broaden your horizons so making sure your personal brand as well as your Linkedin are professional up to date and accurate. Here speech was mostly tips and advice so I will list the most important tips that I took away from this session.

  • Make sure your facebook is professional (especially if you know that potential employers will be viewing it.. which they will be according to her)
  • Before connecting with a teacher or employer make sure to email them asking if it is okay in advanced. If you are interviewing with someone but have not gotten to know them yet, do not connect with them until you are hired and you have proven yourself.
  • Only sign email and letters with "sincerely" only.
  • Anything on your resume should be on Instagram
  • List any useful language skills you have
  • Recommendations: At least 3 recommendations, no family members or friends and do not go back to far in your life for recommendations unless they are prevalent. (You can always ask someone to rewrite your recommendations, you are in control)
  • list all conference experience
  • list internships under "jobs"
  • always use the phrase "thank you in advance for your time and consideration"
  • always explore the company pages that you are interested in and follow them
  • do not use the words "responsible, worked on, helped" to describe anything
  • update your resume every 90 days and update your Linked in even more often
  • make sure your current resume is on the career services website
  • join groups and be strategic
  • continuously build your network: Join toastmasters, greek life
  •  Be strategic
  • Do community service that shares strengths
  • get involved socially, and join committees
