In one of the last few events that I had the opportunity to attend while at the 2016 AMA ICC was this presentation by Stacie Garlieb, President of Successful Impressions LLC. In her presentation, Garlieb offered many useful pieces of advice on networking (especially with LinkedIn):
- Continue relationships from college & also build connections with co-workers
- Learn about new fields/businesses
- LinkedIn:
- Add professors, classmates, AMA members, mentors, & supervisors; as long as they are/were close enough to remember you
- When adding others, send personalized messages inviting them to connect
- Get recommendations from past supervisors, mentors, etc.
- Internships go under the Experience section
- Conference experience goes under the Organization section (ex. AMA)
- Make & receive introductions from one connection to another
- Don't write 'responsible for' or 'worked on' in job descriptions
- Update profile (like a resume) once every ~90 days
- Follow companies
- InApply can be useful resource
- Student Career Resources on AMA.org is a great resource for AMA members to use
